Concussion

 Concussion Solutions Program

  •  A Concussion is a Brain Injury and should be taken seriously!
  •  80-90% of concussions resolve in a short (7-10 day) period.
  •  Recovery may be longer for children and adolescents
  •  Long term consequences of a concussion are not yet fully understood

Services available at Honsberger Physiotherapy:

  • Baseline concussion testing (team and individual testing)
  • Post concussion assessment & treatment (manual therapy, "brain retraining", sports specific training)
  • Neurocognitve training
  • Advanced Concussion training workshops for Sports Trainers
  • Concussion lectures and workshops

Common concussion symptoms include:

·  headache, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears

·  feeling like being in a fog

·  irritable

·  sleep disturbances

·  cognitive impairment

·  loss of consciousness, amnesia

The evidence continues to mount concerning the long term effects related to repeat head trauma or concussions. What is more startling is that the repeat force to produce as much or more damage than the first concussion is in the 50% range!

While some may say concussions are an inherent risk in playing contact sports, what is unacceptable is the number of second incident concussions. Research has indicated a substantial risk for permanent brain damage in repeat concussion scenarios.

A concussion is not a singular event. It is an injury and it runs its course like any other injury. It can often take several days for the injury symptoms to peak before starting to resolve. So how can players once concussed return to that current game or activity in which they were injured as they so often do?

Pre-season concussion testing is the only way to create personal baseline objective scores. The International Concussion in Sport Group at their international summits have indicated that baseline testing is a key component to concussion management.

Return to play decisions, are now objectively based on repeat testing.

Our program features read and react skills (with and without physical load), cognition skills, and can identify both reaction and concentration errors utilizing the Dynavision D2,  fitLight, Neurotracker and PlayAttention system.

These take place in a manner to replicate the decision-making processes of sport as well as a physical demand test. Not only does it test does visual motor reaction, it can assess memory, cognitive function, executive function and even computational competency.  One advantage over other methods is that we see the athlete in action and also assess their dynamic physical ability versus sitting at a computer screen.   A similar program is used at the University of Cincinnati for concussion testing on all their varsity athletes.  In fact, they have also seen a trend in the reduction of concussions in their varsity football athletes through training on the Dynavision D2.

Testing takes 20-30 minutes. Individual baseline testing fees are $60.00 while team / group pricing is $55.00. All repeat testing to determine suitability to return to play is free.  Baseline results are valid for approximately 1 year for those under 18 years of age.

Our testing program is part of our Return to Learn / Return to Play programs.
