Why Should We Look At The Feet?

You may have heard that your feet are the foundation to your Health. How do you suppose this can be so important to your health? Have you ever seen how a simple correction in your feet mechanics can take away your knee pain? Find out in this article.

Foot screening

Why do foot screening?

Your feet are the foundation of your body! A good analogy is the foundation of a house. If the foundation is weak the house will eventually start to collapse. Likewise if your feet are weak your body will collapse. Proper foot function provides support for the body above, keeping it strong. On the other hand, if the foot collapses then the body above is inadequately supported. In biomechanical terms, collapsing of the foot is called over-pronation.

Pronation is a necessary motion of the foot which allows the foot to unlock and absorb shock.  When pronation continues for too long or happens at the wrong time (over-pronation) this unlocks the foot when it should be locked. The result is a poor foundation, which can result in poorer health and/or performance.

Health is effected negatively as the poor foundation produces instability in the body above. Instability produces unwanted stress on all the tissues of the body, including joints, muscles, bones, etc leading to more injuries and poorer health.

So what does this have to do with sport or work performance?

In a work environment poor foot function leads to increased risk of injury, loss of manpower and cost to the employer.

In most sports, optimal performance requires solid contact with the ground and the ability to produce ground reaction force.

Your body uses ground reaction force to produce power, which is then transmitted through your legs, core and body. When maximal ground reaction force is not produced you lose power in your sport, whether it’s running speed, jumping power, swing velocity, arm velocity, etc. Your feet are the connection between the ground and your body so if they are over-pronated (unlocked) you lose power.

A foot screen is a quick assessment of foot and body biomechanics to determine any discrepancy from normal function which may require a change in footwear or the addition of some type of supportive device in your footwear

This will maximize performance and prevent many injuries because your body will simply be more stable and balanced.
