What is athletic therapy?

Athletic therapy is a branch of healthcare that focuses on the prevention, assessment, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, particularly in athletes and physically active individuals. Athletic therapists use a combination of manual therapy, exercise prescription, and rehabilitation techniques to help their patients recover from injuries and improve their physical performance.

Athletic therapists also work to educate their patients on injury prevention, proper biomechanics, and nutrition, to minimize the risk of future injuries. They often work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, physiotherapists, and coaches, to provide comprehensive care to their patients.

At Honsberger Physio+, our athletic therapists are certified professionals in Canada and Ontario and are specifically trained in making sure you reach your full athletic, mobility, and performance potential. If you think you could benefit from athletic therapy, book a consultation today.

Who can benefit from athletic therapy?

Athletic therapy can benefit anyone who experiences musculoskeletal pain or injuries, not just athletes. Anyone who engages in physical activity or has a sedentary lifestyle can benefit from athletic therapy.

Athletic therapy can be particularly beneficial for athletes and physically active individuals, such as dancers or runners, who may be at a higher risk of experiencing injuries due to the demands of their sport or activity. Our athletic therapists help these individuals prevent injuries by providing education on proper warm-up techniques, stretching exercises, and injury prevention strategies.

Additionally, athletic therapy can be helpful for individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries, as athletic therapists can develop personalized rehabilitation programs to help patients regain strength, mobility, and function.

If you’re someone who wants to improve your physical health, prevent injuries, or recover from injuries, working with one of our certified athletic therapists can support you in reaching your goals. Working with an athletic therapist can provide the support and guidance you need to optimize your physical performance and quality of life.

What's the difference between athletic therapy vs. physiotherapy?

There are a number of similarities between athletic therapy and physiotherapy (especially sports physiotherapy). Both professions focus on musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, muscle and joint pain, and maximizing mobility.

With athletic therapy, however, there is a stronger focus on performance-based improvements. Athletic therapy is geared toward maximizing your ability to perform at your peak in your physical pursuits, be that sports, recreational fitness, or a physical occupation. The goal of our athletic therapists is to keep your specific training needs in mind and ensure that the support you receive gives you the greatest benefit at the physical activities you do regularly.
