What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is offered by Sama Farah-Mina in our Aurora clinic.

How does a pelvic floor physiotherapist differ from an orthopedic one?

The biomechanical foundation of our assessments are the same, but a pelvic floor physiotherapist is specially trained to assess and treat your pelvic floor, which may include incontinence in men and women, pre and post-natal issues, cancer recovery and pelvic pain.

DID YOU KNOW THAT KEGELS ARE NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Like any other dysfunction, your muscles may require strengthening, sometimes they require lengthening.

Doing kegels, and doing them incorrectly, can be detrimental to your recovery.

A pelvic health physiotherapist is trained to teach you proper pelvic floor strengthening.

What does the assessment of pelvic floor dysfunction usually involve?

We start by listening to your health history and concerns.

Your physiotherapist will ask you questions to understand bowel and bladder function, your sexual function and any pain related to the pelvic area.

Sama will use her understanding of biomechanics and the pelvic floor to perform an objective exam.
Her training allows her to perform internal exams* to assess the pelvic floor, if necessary.

*Internal exams are always OPTIONAL.

Based on our findings, we then create a treatment plan in line with your goals incorporating movement and exercise, manual therapy, healthcare tools, education and advice.

So is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy for you?

You can benefit from Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy if you have (or have had) any of the following:

  • “Dribbling” when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise
  • Urgency to urinate so strong you can’t control it
(i.e. your pants don’t make off enough when you go pee)Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Aurora, ON
  • Urinating more than 8-10 times a day
  • Waking at night to urinate
  • Difficulty emptying your bladder or starting the flow of urine
  • Pain in or around the pelvis
  • Feeling of pressure “down there”
  • Low back, hip or tailbone pain
  • Difficulty having bowel movements
  • Pain with intercourse or insertion
  • Painful periods

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can also help with the following:

  • Pregnancy and Post-Partum: Pelvic Health Physiotherapy can help you prepare for labour and delivery, manage your pregnancy pains, and help you to maintain your pelvic floor strength.
  • Prolapse: If you’ve been told that you have a pelvic organ prolapse and may benefit from surgery, Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy should be the first line of defense.
  • Radical Prostatectomy and Prostatitis: Prostate surgery and Prostatitis can be major contributors of pelvic floor dysfunction in males. Treating pelvic pain in males and females is crucial to maintaining good quality of life.
  • Cancer: Radiation to the abdominal wall and the pelvis can damage your pelvic floor. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is crucial to maintain function after radiation, as well as after reconstructive surgery. Chemotherapy induced menopause is also a risk factor for Pelvic Floor dysfunction and should be addressed.
  • Abdominal surgery (including c-sections): Abdominal surgery leaves you with scar tissue that affects the mobility of the core and its content, which in turn can affect the pelvic floor.
  • Pelvic Surgeries: Any surgery involving the pelvic floor should be properly rehabilitated. Surgery is a traumatic process for all the tissues involved to heal from. You wouldn’t leave an ACL surgery untreated.
  • Pediatric Incontinence: Children can also benefit from pelvic floor treatment. Teaching children proper bladder and bowel habits is vital in the development of their pelvic floor.

Our Aurora Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can help you find and address the source of your dysfunction in order to improve your overall quality of life!
