In Canada today, more and more people are living well beyond their 80’s, so leading an active healthy lifestyle is becoming more and more important, so that our golden years can be truly enjoyable.
As we age, several physical changes occur:
- Our muscles stiffen and weaken, making activities of daily living, lifting and balance more difficult.
- Our connective and support tissues become more rigid, causing decreased circulation to our muscles and joints, to our heart and brain, and our digestive system.
- Our bones lose their density, which can increase the risk of fracture with a fall.
The good news is that these changes are not inevitable, that we can do something to slow down and improve this.
Exercise has been shown to drastically improve Strength, Balance, Endurance, Bone Density and Neuromuscular Re-education, resulting in improved everyday function, decreased anxiety and depression.
Our bodies were designed to move, so an active lifestyle is important at all ages, but It is never too late to become more active.
